How Do I Select An Immigration Lawyer?
I have a graduate degree from US and I am on F1 OPT valid till Oct 07. I accepted offer from a software consulting firm: company A in March 07 and they filed for my H1b which got approved. They have provided me receipt number but not given a copy of approval notice. Company A has not put me on a project so far and I am not on their payroll. Now I have offer for a full time position from software company B. I am looking for a lawyer to help me with the transfer H1b and negotiate end of contract with Company A. How do I select suitable immigration lawyer? Can anyone recommend a lawyer who has actually worked on a case like this? Do you know any good lawyers that will give a free consultation and tell whether they know anything about handling a case like this before any paid consultation? Location of the lawyer within US does not matter to me.

I first would go online and just search for immigration lawyers. However, I will pay attention to the ones that have a nice and user friendly websites. The reason is because those lawyer firms should be the bigger and more well-known ones. Second, You may find 5 to 10 of these lawyer firms. Then what you do is all them up or email them to ask them your questions and how much they think the cost is going to be. Usually, if a lawyer answers ur question and even gives you some advices, then this lawyer is a good one. The ones that don’t call you back nor email you back, You cannot count on them. Just think about it, you are asking him/her questions, and that means you are a potential client of his/hers, but he/she doesn’t even contat you back. What might happen if you give him/her your $$, you get the idea. My coworker is the victim of irresponsible lawyer. She paid $1500 and got “NOTHING”.
Third, go to the Office and meet the lawyer in person. Watch how/what he/she talks. A good/experienced lawyer should be able to answer all your questions. If he lawyer is like..”well, let me check it first. hmmm…I’m not sure about that.” then you need to b careful.
Price is also important. You know how much (appox.) you are supposed to be charged. If a lawyer charge to yoo mush or too less, then you need to watch out too.
